He unwittingly led the way to the outskirts of town. Right past the red light district, without stopping. No, where he went… in a developmental industrial area… was literally a junkyard.
Up to a derelict spaceship on which he rapped his knuckles. And it opened. Giving him a boarding ramp, with a dark inhuman shape—a droid? yes, KX security series—standing inside.
"You're not due for a check-in," said the droid, with a male Core-accented voice. "What's wrong?"
'Joreth' shook his head, giving a cursory glance around, and waved the droid into the ship as he entered it too. But from inside, his voice came, "Leave it open. I need air."
So the boarding ramp stayed down. And the voices inside the ship could be heard outside.
"What's wrong?" the droid repeated.
"I can't do this, Kay," said the human. "I can't keep doing this."
"Which part of 'this'? Aiding the Admiral? Minding his family? Or dealing with your own?"
"Jyn's not my family. She can't be."
"Why not? Why not take advantage of—"
"Because that's exactly what I'm doing. Taking advantage. I have a say in this. She hasn't."
"You sleep better with her. Your vitals have been steadily—"
"Kay, I'm lying to her. The closer we get… I want to stop lying."
"Is that an option?"
"No."
"So you have to keep lying. Is that so hard? That's been your job most of your life, now, hasn't it?"
"It's different with her. I want it to be different. I don't know if you can understand…"
"Different how?"
"…"
"Cassian."
"I want it to be real."
"What would that require?"
"Telling her the truth. Risking everything. My life, her life if she decided not to turn me in, the mission… I could see if she wanted to defect, and if so, get us both out, but probably before achieving whatever I'm here to achieve in the first place… I've never put anything ahead of a mission in my life, Kay."
"Including yourself."
"I guess."
"What makes her different?"
"…"
"This is why you're here, isn't it? To talk this through? So do it. Cassian, what makes Jyn different?"
"…She just is. …And how I feel…"
"Which is?"
"I… think I… love—"
"Shh." The droid suddenly cut him off. "Something just moved outside."
The voices fell abruptly silent. And the droid's metallic footfalls approached the ramp again.
